Installing SSD On My Old Asus S551L Laptop

Hey Fellas

In this video I am going to show you a simple way of installing SSD on your old laptops. The technique is low cost when compared to buying a whole new laptop. Here I am also retaining the existing 1TB HDD by replacing it with the DVD drive which I am not using anymore. Another reason for doing this is, I am using 240 GB SSD and reinstalling the windows after the upgrade ( this part is not covered in this video, this in only an hardware installation video). If you are choosing 1 TB SSD, then you may also remove the HDD completely and retain your DVD RW drive.

I have not included RAM upgrade in this video, since I did it separately. But I have recorded all the steps in my Blog. Go to Upgrading RAM Of My Old Asus S551L Laptop

Parts Used:

1) CARECASE® Optical Bay 2nd Hard Drive Caddy

2) Crucial BX500 240GB 3D NAND SATA 6.35 cm (2.5-inch) SSD

Tools Needed:

1) Phillips head magnetic screwdriver ( buy a set if you don’t have one already, I don’t know the size which I used)

2) Antistatic Fiber Pry set (to open the pack panel of the laptop) – Included in the above set

Note: make sure you don’t have static electricity on you. Static electricity can damage the electronics when touched. I recommend using an Anti-Static Electricity Grounding Wristband with Cord Ground Cable and Gloves.

Lastly, please be aware that I am not supporting or advertising any brand or parts which I have used in this article. The procedure described above is for information purpose only and if you intend to, or attempting this procedure, please refer the manufacturers manual for detailed information and use this information at your own risk.

Please feel free to comment and discuss to come up with more effective way of doing this.

NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS PROCEDURE, IF YOUR LAPTOP IS WITHIN WARRANTY PERIOD. PERFORMING UNAUTHORIZED RAM UPGRADE MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
